After Care Instructions for Dental Filling

We recommend following these after-care instructions after a Dental Filling procedure to minimize potential discomfort or sensitivity, ensure your dental filling lasts longer, and maintain optimum oral health to prevent other dental issues from arising.

Immediate Post Treatment Care

  • Avoid Eating or Drinking : Avoid hot and cold foods for a few hours after the procedure to prevent sensitivity and discomfort.
  • Don’t Chew on the Filled Tooth : Avoid chewing on the filled tooth until the numbness from the anaesthesia has completely worn off.
  • Mild Pain Management : You may experience pain or pressure sensitivity in the filled tooth. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage this discomfort.
  • Rinse with Salt Water : Please rinse your mouth with warm salt water to relieve any discomfort in the tissues or gum around the tooth that has been filled.
  • Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods : If the dentist has recommended to avoid hard or sticky food for the first couple of days, then please follow the instructions.

Long Term Care

  • Regular Dental Visits : Keep up with the regular dental checkups at the dental office. Regular visits allow the dentist to monitor your filling and ensure it's still functioning as it should.
  • Maintain Good Oral Hygiene : Brush at least twice daily using toothpaste with fluoride and floss daily. A consistent hygiene routine will not only prolong the life of your filling but also prevent new cavities.
  • Mindful Eating : Reduce intake of sugary drinks or snacks. Frequent consumption of sugary drinks and snacks can lead to tooth decay around and under the filling.
  • Use Mouthguard if Needed : Teeth grinding can cause fillings to wear away, crack, or dislodge. Please consider wearing a mouthguard if you grind your teeth at night.
  • Apply Desensitising Toothpaste if Necessary : If your filled tooth remains sensitive for a few days, using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth can help. However, if the tooth sensitivity persists, please call our office immediately to get it checked by the dentist.
  • Replace Worn Out Fillings : Dental fillings don't last forever. If you notice a filling is worn out or damaged, a new filling may be required to prevent further damage to your tooth.
