Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Check up & Clean

Why do I need a Check-up & Clean?

Prevention is always better than cure. A dental check-up allows you to become aware of your existing dental health. It helps prevent minor problems from becoming major ones. It is important to have regular dental check-up and clean to avoid any dental emergencies which can be heavy on the pocket.

What is involved in getting a Dental Check-up?

A Dental Check-up involves a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, jaw joint and mouth & it helps prevent minor problems from becoming major ones. At Tooth Smart Dental Cannon Hill, the dentist will check your teeth for more than just tooth decay, your dental check-up will include.

  • Checking teeth for any signs of decay, wear, erosion, or cracks.
  • Checking gums for any signs of gum disease and bone loss.
  • Checking soft tissues of the mouth for any abnormality or tumours
  • Checking jaw joint for any signs of teeth grinding
  • Checking your overall bite and chewing ability
  • Checking your smile and addressing any cosmetic concerns regarding it

What happens at my Dental Check-up & Clean appointment?

The dentist will perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth, gums, jaw joint, soft tissues, bite, and smile to assess your current dental health and to check for any potential problems. This assessment may include a clinical examination and any necessary radiographs. The dentist will then address any questions or concerns that you may have. This is followed by a Professional Clean and Polish and a Fluoride treatment. Depending upon your presenting conditions, the dentist will create and discuss your treatment plan. The dentist will then provide you with oral health care instructions so that you can maintain a good oral hygiene routine at home as well

Why do I need X-ray?

Depending on your presenting condition, after the oral exam, the dentist may recommend a dental X-ray. An X-ray can help the dentist look for any decay between teeth as well as identifying any impacted teeth, abscesses, or cysts on the roots of your teeth.

It is recommended to repeat your standard dental bitewing X-rays every 2 years. OPG panoramic X-rays will only be taken and repeated as necessary. We offer the X-ray service on the premises for both standard dental X-rays as well as OPG. We use digital X-rays which offers the advantage of better resolution in images, reduced radiation exposure than traditional film X-rays and instant availability of the X-rays.

What happens after my Dental Check-up & Clean?

If there are any complications, a return visit may be required for restoration work, such as a filling or crown. For more complex work, the dentist may need to refer you to a specialist such as an orthodontist, periodontist, oral surgeon, or an endodontist. If any referral is required, we will arrange that for you and prebook you for your next 6 monthly Dental Check-up and Clean as well.

Will it be covered on my Health Fund?

This will depend on your health fund and the type of cover. If you are unsure, we can provide you a health fund quote prior to commencing treatment.
