Wisdom Tooth

What is a Wisdom Tooth?

A Wisdom tooth or your third molar is a molar that comes out behind the second adult molar in the top and bottom jaw at the very far back of the mouth. Wisdom teeth usually emerge in the late teens or early 20s behind the existing adult teeth. If your jaw has room to accommodate for Wisdom teeth, then they may develop and come out in their expected position easily. In the absence of enough room in the jaws, Wisdom teeth can get stuck or grown in a wrong position and hence become impacted. Impacted Wisdom teeth can cause pain in the face or jaw, difficulty in eating or chewing, bad breath, swelling of the gums around the tooth or crowding of teeth.

Why are my Wisdom teeth hurting?

Wisdom teeth can hurt if they are impacted or decaying. Pain from a Wisdom tooth can present in the form of: –

  • Pain in the tooth itself or at the back of the mouth
  • Pain in the jaw
  • Swelling of the gums around the Wisdom teeth
  • Difficulty in eating or chewing the food
  • Difficulty in opening the mouth
  • Bad Breath
  • Pus discharge from the gums

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, make an appointment to see the Dentist to diagnose the condition and receive proper care.
